“It is not good for the man to be alone” (Gen 2:18). What is the definition of ‘good’ in the Garden of Eden? Something is called ‘good’ when it is perfect. In the perspective of spirituality, it is to grow in maturity (Heb 6:1; Eph 4:13). …Read More
That is the reason why Adam was made before Eve: because there is a process of growth involved before Adam receives his ‘suitable helper’. Thus, preparation for marriage involves growing in one’s spirituality and not simply practical readiness.
Consequently in marriage, the husband and wife must continue in their perfection. Just as the woman is the ‘bone of (man’s) bones’, her growth is both impacting & impacted by his growth, vice versa. Through confirming perfection, mankind will fulfil God’s mission to subdue the earth.
What about singles? Although God’s original intent is not for man to be alone, there are provisions for single believers. In fact, singlehood is a special calling (1 Cor 7:7, Mt 19:10-12), but those who choose to live that way must do it for the sake of the Kingdom of Heaven (Mt 19:12). Whether to remain single or get married, all must examine if they are doing it for God or for themselves.
In Gen 2, we also discuss why God created the 2 trees in the garden. A common misconception is that God put the tree of knowledge of good & evil to entice man to sin. But how can a good God intend to cause evil? A better interpretation is that the 2 trees are symbols of God, meant to let man know that life and the knowledge of good & evil only comes through God. Thus the sin of Adam & Eve is not simply disobedience, but the desire to replace God & live life without Him.
The people of God should desire to conform to the principle of creation and God’s institution of marriage, so that our marriages, family & church can become the Garden of Eden.
